At a small restaurant on Broadway
Avenue in San Antonio, I saw this
woman eating a bowl of menudo.

As I often do, I asked if I could
take her photo to make a painting.

She said, “Sure, how do you want me?”

So far, no one had turned me down
when I ask for a photo.

Maybe that’s because I ask only the
right people, and when they hesitate,
I ask again.

If I sense a no, I don’t ask.
Some folks are quite private.

And rightly so.
