The High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) computer-based exam is an alternative to the GED test. Candidates receive the same state-issued high school equivalency credential.
HiSET will only be offered in Texas through August 31, 2021. All exams purchased must be completed on or before this date.
The HiSET consistes of 5 subtests:
- READING, 65 minutes
- WRITING, 120 minutes
- MATH, 90 minutes
- SCIENCE, 80 minutes
- SOCIAL SCIENCE, 70 minutes

State of Texas Eligibility Requirements
You must be 18 years or older, not be enrolled in an accredited high school, and not be a high school graduate from an accredited high school in order to take the HiSET exam. You may take the exam if you are 16 or 17 years old and you meet state requirements for an exception. Requests for an exception can be made directly to The Texas Education Agency (TEA). You will be required to create an ETS HiSET candidate profile before you can request an age exception. A Parent/Guardian must submit the request on your behalf; it cannot be submitted by the test taker. You must include your ETS HiSET ID with the request or it will be rejected. TEA will review your eligibility and apply the exception to your HiSET

Test Day
Candidates must follow instructions provided when registering to take the HiSET. A valid form of government-issued (national or foreign) identification and proof of Texas residency are required in order to test. If you do not bring the required items, you will not be allowed to test.
Examples of government (national or foreign) issued photo ID:
- State driver license
- Department of Public Safety identification card
- Military ID
- Passport
- U.S. passport card
- matrícula consular
School ID cards will not be accepted.
Examples of proof of residency in Texas:
- Texas driver license
- Utility bill showing a Texas address
- Bank statement showing a Texas address

Test Results
Unofficial scores are displayed immediately after completion of a computer-based test for all multiple-choice sections. Scores are available through a student's HiSET account. NOTE: the Testing Center staff does not have access to a student's HiSET scores.
Practice Test
The state of Texas does not require you to take an official practice test in order to take the HiSET exam.
However, it is encouraged to seek test preparation and instruction. While Texas A&M-San Antonio does not endorse any one particular study agency, the following websites have proven to be valuable preparation tools:

Accommodations
Accommodations must be arranged through HiSET at the time a student registers for an exam. Students who require accommodations must contact HiSET directly and cannot register for the exam online.
